DIY Pumpkin Décor Ideas (That Aren’t Orange!)

When it comes to fall decorating, orange pumpkins are classic—but sometimes it’s fun to switch things up! If you’re looking for non-traditional pumpkin décor ideas, I’ve got you covered. These DIY pumpkin projects skip the orange and bring in everything from metallics to moody tones and modern art vibes. Whether you’re decorating your front porch or your dining table, these pumpkins are anything but ordinary.

Here are five creative ways to decorate pumpkins that will wow your guests this season.

1. Blue & Gold Leaf Pumpkin

There’s just something about blue and gold together that feels elegant and fresh for fall.

  • How to make it: Paint your pumpkin in a deep navy or powder blue using acrylic paint. Once it’s dry, apply gold leaf (or gold foil sheets) around the stem or in a random pattern for a beautiful look.
  • Tip: Don’t spend a lot of money on gold leaf and the special glue. I found a pack of gold leaf on Amazon for about $6 and I just used watered down school glue to stick it to the pumpkin!

2. Melted Crayon Pumpkin

Perfect for a colorful and fun look—especially if you have kids who love to help!

  • How to make it: Peel the paper off crayons and break them into pieces. Hot glue the pieces around the pumpkin’s stem, then use a hair dryer to melt them. The wax will drip down the sides, creating a drippy effect. To get the look of iridescent glass, continue melting the drips with the hair dryer until they melt together.
  • Tip: Use lighter-colored pumpkins (like white or pastel ones) to make the colors pop even more.

3. Tree Silhouette & Bats Pumpkin

If you love something a little spooky—but still classy—this one’s for you.

  • How to make it: Paint your pumpkin a matte gray, black, or white. Once dry, use gold marker to draw a tree silhouette with branches stretching out. Add small bat stickers flying around the tree for a touch of Halloween charm.
  • Tip: To make it even easier… buy pumpkins in the color you want as the base color!

4. Crackle Finish Pumpkin

This one’s all about texture! A crackle finish gives your pumpkin a vintage, weathered look that’s perfect for farmhouse-style décor.

  • How to make it: Paint your pumpkin with a base coat. Once it’s dry, apply crackle medium according to the instructions, then paint over it with a contrasting color. As it dries, the top layer will crack, revealing the color beneath.
  • Finish it off: Add a raffia bow or jute twine around the stem for that rustic touch.

5. Nail Polish Swirl Pumpkin

This one looks high-end but is surprisingly easy! I will warn you though – it is messy!

  • How to make it: Fill a disposable container with room-temperature water. Add a few drops of nail polish in different colors and lightly swirl them with a toothpick. Dip your pumpkin in and pull it out to reveal a gorgeous marbled swirl effect.
  • Tip: Try combinations like white and rose gold, black and silver, or blush pink with gold for a glam, modern vibe.

Final Touches

Whether you go for bold and bright, moody and metallic, or rustic and weathered, these DIY pumpkin ideas are proof that fall decorating doesn’t have to be all orange and traditional.

Mix and match styles, display them together, and create your own modern pumpkin patch right at home.
